CHIROPRACTIC IN THE STATES: Wisconsin, Sports Exams Bill Heads to Wisconsin Senate

Chiropractors would be allowed to perform sports physicals under a bill headed to the Wisconsin state Senate for consideration.

The Assembly approved the bill on a voice vote. It must pass the Senate and be signed by Gov. Scott Walker before becoming law.

Democrats who objected argue chiropractors are not qualified to give full physical exams for student-athletes.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe and Effective for Older Adults?

Chiropractic care represents a safe and effective treatment alternative for older adults, according to evidence-based recommendations published in the May issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.

“The most important take-home point from this updated document is that given the growing need for evidence-based, cost-efficient care in the older adult population, chiropractic care is a very attractive alternative,” explained lead author Cheryl Hawk, DC, PhD, Professor at Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena, Texas.

“Chiropractic care incorporates many different treatment modalities, as outlined in the document. One of the key treatments that chiropractors deliver is spinal manipulative therapy (SMT). The evidence base for SMT continues to grow.”

The Biopsychosocial Model and Chiropractic

There is an increasing awareness, interest and acceptance of the biopsychosocial (BPS) model by all health care professionals involved with patient care. The areas of spine care and pain medicine are no exception, and in fact, these areas of health care are a major centerpiece of the movement from the traditional biomedical model to a BPS model of patient assessment and delivery of care. 

Biological influences are an important component of health and disease, particularly in the area of spine care and pain management. Acknowledging this aspect of patient presentation holds value in guiding appropriate management approaches. Appreciation of the psychological and social aspects of patient care carries significance as well and should not be overlooked.
